Acne Scars

Medical innovations mean that acne scars are something that you do not have to live with any longer. Much more than a skin condition, acne scars often lead to a lack of confidence and self-esteem. Makeup can only cover so much.

Your Concerns

  • Inflammation
  • Firm raised bumps or keloid scars on body
  • Depressed scar
  • Icepick scar
  • Pitted scar
  • Skin discolouration
What is acne scarring?

When acne breakouts penetrate the skin deeply, the breakouts damage the skin and the tissue beneath it from the infection and also from the person physically picking at the skin. As the acne clears, the body tries to repair this damage. During the healing process, the fibroblasts in the dermis produce a substance called collagen. Collagen acts as a scaffold, providing support to the epidermis. Too little or too much collagen in the wrong place will create a scar.

Different types of acne scars

The type of scar depends on how much collagen your body makes.

  • Raised (Hypertrophic) acne scars: firm raised bumps caused by too much collagen and are more common on the shoulders, upper back and chest, and in people with darker skin types.
  • Depressed (Atrophic) acne scars: Are the most common type of scar and are caused when not enough collagen is produced.

Atrophic scars are further subdivided into 3 categories:

We don’t really know why some people get more scars and others don’t. If your parents or other family members have acne scars, it is likely that you will scar too. Sometimes even mild acne can result in scarring. The best way to prevent scarring is to treat acne quickly.

Professional treatments

DMK’s unique method of scar revision is highly effective at reducing scar tissue and smoothing uneven skin textures and tones. Many clients come to us after using ineffective scar treatment products which work topically rather than remodeling the skin back to form a firm, flat surface. DMK’s ALKALINE WASH is highly effective in dissolving and removing old scar material because the treatment REMOVES and REBUILDS at the same time. Alkalizing the skin correctly softens skin tissue via cell desquamation, many times creating a mild irritation that forms a light scab. When the scab falls off, the scarred area appears smoother and flatter.

Radio Frequency (RF), which is less intensive than laser is able to penetrate the dermis without harming it. Unlike conventional laser treatments which can damage up to 70% of the epidermal layer in an effort to try and target the location of the scar, RF has been shown to only impact 5% of the epidermal layer.

With RF, the energy builds an inflammatory response in the upper dermal layer. This means it is subdermal; any scar tissue is rebuilt below the skin layer. In essence, the damaged collagen is being removed and replaced with brand new collagen.

If you currently have active acne or inflamed acne, see our treatment page for Acne Treatment for more information on an effective treatment.

Microneedling uses micro injuries to activate the inflammatory-healing processes in the deeper dermal layers of the skin. This acute inflammatory process activates the skin’s natural removal of old, damaged collagen and elastin, as well as scar tissue. The surrounding healthy collagen helps to quickly heal the damage done by the Microneedling procedure, resulting in fresh, new skin cells.  In this way, the scarring (including acne scars), and texture are treated and softened.
